A Unique Fixer Upper Opportunity – Quebec Tax Credit

Sharon’s been my best friend since before we were both able to pronounce the phrase, and if there’s one point we’ve always diverged on, it’s our taste in significant others: I’ve always had a penchant for the slick, suited professional, while she’s always loved the rugged, handyman/lumberjack-type. (Maybe that’s why we’re still such good friends- no guy drama).

Sharon married a regular Paul Bunyan- a 6’ 3” blonde outdoorsman who owns his own landscaping business and whose biceps make Hulk Hogan’s look like Edward’s from Twilight. Needless to say, when it came time for them to choose a home, “Paul” ended up choosing the house whose basement could, at best, be described as a unique fixer-up opportunity, and at worst, a training area for a UFC fighter on the comeback trail.

After 2 months of renovations, which included extensive plumbing repairs, a complete overhaul of the electrical system, new drywall and a tiled floor, Sharon and I headed to C&M Textiles to inquire about permanently fixed blinds on a few of the downstairs windows. (I know, I know, it sounds weird, but hey- it’s her house).

Aside from offering Sharon a free at home consultation for her blinds, C&M kindly informed us of something I had absolutely no idea about: The Quebec Home Reno Tax Credit. Did you know that our provincial government offers a credit of up to $2, 500 towards home renovations? Because I sure didn’t!

Of course, terms and conditions* do apply, but without that knowledge, Sharon and “Paul” wouldn’t have been able to collect their nice $2215.14 cheque after tax season, which incidentally paid for their brand new pool and foosball tables, (and alcohol for the bar) in their newly refurbished, basement rec room…

I’m having my slick, suited professional shuffle some papers to see if this applies retroactively.

I’d like a few bottles of something for our bar…
