Blackout Roller Shades

What Happens in Vegas…

I’ve never been much of a gambler and to be honest, I’ve never had any great desire to visit Las Vegas (I’m more of a Santorini/Nice/Capri type of gal), but when you’re the maid of honor at your best friend’s wedding and she decides that’s where the bachelorette party is going to be, you kind of have no choice but to go.

Despite my constant reminders that my best friend had probably watched Bridesmaids and The Hangover trilogy one time too many, and her constant reassurances that I would indeed, have fun, the highlight of my trip (aside from losing 300 dollars on a slot machine) was my hotel room discovery at the MGM Grand.

No, it wasn’t anything that would force me to repeat the clichéd mantra, “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” rather, I was caught unaware and genuinely enthralled by the technological marvel that was covering my hotel window: motorized blinds (and remote controlled, no less)!

You probably think I’m crazy, paying attention to a rather unremarkable piece of hotel room accent when surrounded by the glitz and glamour of fabulous Las Vegas, and maybe you’re right. But in my line of work, sitting for 6-8 uninterrupted hours at a computer screen is often the norm, and when inspiration hits, any little distraction from completing your thoughts can destroy your word-flow mojo and send you to the deepest, darkest chasms of Writer’s Block inferno; distractions like the sunlight shining through your ridiculously large windows and reflecting off your computer screen directly into your eyes, blinding you and providing a quite irritating distraction.

Needless to say, as soon as we got back to Montreal, I called C&M Textiles to see if they carried this particularly precious piece of technology, so I could replace my office curtains with motorized blinds I could control from my desk, thereby leaving my creative process unhindered.

Of course they had it. And now, whenever the sun proves too distracting, I can just close my blinds via remote control and continue typing away!
